Update Lufthansa IT breakdown – Reason was railway construction
Update 11:45 BST (with cause of breakdown):
A group-wide IT system failure at Lufthansa is massively disrupting the airline group’s flight operations at its Frankfurt hub. Systems for check-in and boarding are affected, said a Lufthansa spokesman. There will be massive delays and flight cancellations. The cause, he said, was civil engineering work by Deutsche Bahn during the night in Frankfurt, during which several Deutsche Telekom fiber optic cables were cut.
Engineering work by Deutsche Bahn caused breakdown
Telekom said in an information to customers that voice and Internet services were affected. “We expect the complete fault clearance to continue until the afternoon,” the notice said Lufthansa and Eurowings flights in Germany were affected.
According to Lufthansa, however, not the Group’s other airlines – Austrian Airlines of Austria, Brussels Airlines of Belgium and Swiss. On the website Allestörungen.de, reports of problems at Lufthansa began to accumulate at around eight o’clock.
According to the Frankfurt Airport website, a good 30 outgoing flights of the airline were canceled in the morning. For arrivals, there were more than 90 connections. Munich Airport initially reported about seven cancellations each for departures and arrivals. In Hamburg, there was only one Lufthansa connection in the morning.
A Lufthansa spokesman did not confirm a report by the Bloomberg news agency that all Lufthansa Group departures had been canceled. No comment could initially be obtained from Deutsche Telekom and Deutsche Flugsicherung.
Lufthansa Confirms IT Outage Leading to Delays and Disruptions
Multiple German airports are affected by widespread Lufthansa IT outage, resulting in significant disruptions and delays for passengers. An as-yet-unknown number of flights have been delayed or canceled. Affected are the systems for check-in as well as for boarding. Aircraft and passengers were jammed at Frankfurt and Munich Airport. Passengers were also not allowed into the waiting planes by tally sheet because, according to staff, important information about the departure was missing. All domestic German flights were initially canceled and passengers were asked to change to trains. Chaos in departure halls was documented by passengers who shared photos and videos online.
Lufthansa builds Crisis Management Team
According to reports by the German news outlet BILD, a crisis management team was convened to assess the impact of the IT outage on Lufthansa’s operations.
A Lufthansa spokeswoman in Frankfurt said that a solution was being worked on intensively. It is still unclear how the system failure occurred.
The airline’s share price immediately came under pressure.

Germany Braces for Widespread Transport Strike: LiveTube to Capture the Action
Next Monday, March 27th, 2023, Germany is bracing for an unprecedented transport strike as two of the country’s most influential labor unions, Verdi and the railway and transport union (EVG), initiate a full-day nationwide strike. The strike is expected to bring major transportation services, including railways, airports, highways, and even maritime transport, to a screeching halt, leaving the country’s infrastructure in a state of disarray.
Anticipated Disruption to Key Transportation Services
The strike is set to commence at the stroke of midnight on Monday, causing widespread disruption to key transportation services. Long-distance, regional, and suburban train services of Deutsche Bahn, as well as other railway companies, are expected to be directly affected. Verdi has additionally called for work stoppages at multiple airports and public transportation services in various states including Hesse, North Rhine-Westphalia, Baden-Württemberg, Saxony, Lower Saxony, Rhineland-Palatinate, and Bavaria. The impact is even expected to extend to highway management and waterway administrations, further exacerbating the nationwide disruption.
Unions’ Role in Coordinating the Strike
The strikes are being meticulously coordinated by Verdi and EVG, labor unions representing workers within the transportation and service sectors. As negotiations with employers over wages and working conditions reach an impasse, the unions have called for an all-day nationwide strike, bringing thousands of workers to the forefront of the protest.
Complete Shutdown of Long-Distance Train Services
The strikes, scheduled to take place on the upcoming Monday, are expected to have a significant impact on long-distance train services. Deutsche Bahn, the largest railway operator in Germany, as well as other railway companies, have announced that long-distance train services will be completely suspended. Regional train services will also be severely affected, with the majority of trains not expected to operate.
Impact on Airports and Public Transportation
Verdi has called for work stoppages at multiple airports, leading to significant disruptions in air travel. Frankfurt Airport, one of the busiest airports in Europe, has announced that no regular passenger traffic will take place on Monday due to the strikes. Public transportation services in several states including Hesse, North Rhine-Westphalia, Baden-Württemberg, Saxony, Lower Saxony, Rhineland-Palatinate, and Bavaria will also be affected by work stoppages.
Highway Management and Waterway Administration
In addition to the impact on railways and airports, the strikes are expected to affect highway management services as well as waterway and maritime administrations. The broad scope of the strikes highlights the scale of the ongoing dispute and the determination of the striking workers.
Union’s Demand for a 10.5 Percent Wage Increase
Verdi, along with the German Civil Service Federation (dbb), is demanding a wage increase of 10.5 percent, with a minimum increase of 500 euros for public service employees. Employers, however, have proposed a wage increase of five percent in two stages, along with one-time payments totaling 2500 euros. The unions have rejected this offer, considering it insufficient.

The strikes are expected to leave many stranded, scrambling to find alternative modes of transportation.
As negotiations continue and both sides seek common ground, the strikes serve as a reminder of the importance of dialogue and compromise in resolving disputes.
