“It makes breathing difficult.” “I'm not afraid for my health." “I'm not going to go to the park.” New York residents expressed mixed reactions on Wednesday (June 7) to the dull gray pallor cast over the city skyline, as smoke from hundreds of Canadian wildfires wafted south. More than a dozen U.S. states were under air-quality alerts on Wednesday. Health officials from Vermont to South Carolina along the East Coast, as well as in Ohio and Kansas in the Midwest, urged millions of residents to limit their time outdoors, warning that fine particulates in the atmosphere could make breathing difficult and pose health risks. The U.S. National Weather Service issued quality air alerts from New England to South Carolina. Schools up and down the East Coast canceled outdoor activities, including sports practices, field trips and recesses, to protect students from the haze. New York City's public schools were open for class, although outdoor events and activities, including middle school graduation, were canceled, postponed or moved indoors. The smoke is crossing the U.S. northern border from Canada, where wildfire season got off to an unusually early and intense start due to persistent warm and dry conditions. Canada is on track for its worst-ever wildfire season. The skies above New York and many other North American cities were a uniform gray, and the air smelled like burning wood. In many places, the early morning sun appeared as a small glowing orange disc. New York City's skyscrapers, which can be seen for miles away on a clear day, were rendered nearly invisible. As of Wednesday morning, New York had the second-worst air quality in the world, according to a ranking of major cities by Swiss air quality technology company IQAir, with Delhi, India's smog-plagued capital city, topping the list. Wildfire smoke has been linked with higher rates of heart attacks and strokes, increases in emergency room visits for asthma and other respiratory conditions, and eye irritation, itchy skin and rashes, among other problems. Canadian authorities on Wednesday issued a starker air-quality warning for the residents of the country's financial capital Toronto due to several raging wildfires that have burned through a record area this year. While wildfires are common in Canada's West, there are blazes in nearly all of the country's 10 provinces and territories, with Quebec the worst affected at present. About 3.3 million hectares have already burned - some 13 times the 10-year average - and more than 120,000 people have been at least temporarily forced out of their homes. 'Prince Harry Cross-Examined on Second Day at High Court' Prince Harry appeared in court for the second day in a row on Wednesday to give evidence in his case against Mirror Group Newspapers. The Duke of Sussex is suing for damages, claiming journalists at the Mirror and People titles gained information unlawfully, including from phone-hacking. Harry told the court that press intrusion and reports about him created distrust in his relationships. On Tuesday, the duke singled out Piers Morgan for criticism, claiming the former Daily Mirror editor had subjected him and his wife Meghan to a “barrage of horrific personal attacks” in the hope he would back down from his legal action. The trial still has two more weeks to run, including witness and closing statements. Mr Justice Fancourt is expected to deliver his judgment later this year. UKRAINIAN President Volodymyr Zelenskiy on Thursday (June 8) visited Kherson hospital, which has been treating people escaping floods caused by the destruction of a huge dam. Earlier on Thursday, he met local officials to discuss emergency operations. Moscow, which launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, and Kyiv blamed each other for the destruction of the Kakhovka Hydroelectric Station and dam on Tuesday, which unleashed flood water from the Dnipro River. Kherson lies on the Dnipro, about 60 km (37 miles) downstream from the Kakhovka dam. Kherson's governor had said earlier on Thursday that 600 square kilometers, or 230 square miles, of the region was under water - most of it on the Russian-occupied side of the river - and that nearly 2,000 people had already left affected areas.
