A delegation of media professionals from Pacific Island countries on Tuesday visited an archaeological site in Pingtan, east China's Fujian Province, to explore how history connects China's southeastern coast to their homeland. As part of the week-long "China Up Close" field survey on the history, culture, natural landscape, and economic development of Fujian, the delegation of 21 representatives from 18 overseas media organizations arrived in Pingtan county after touring several cities in Fujian in the past few days. They toured the International Austronesian Archaeological Research Base, which was set up to explore the relations between Austronesians and the Chinese mainland. The Austronesian language family includes those spoken by hundreds of millions of people in maritime Southeast Asia, New Zealand, the Pacific islands, and Madagascar. Past researches support the claim that Austronesian languages have their roots in China's Taiwan region. But archaeologists have unearthed ruins near the research center that provide significant evidence confirming that Taiwan was probably a mid-way station and the origins of the languages were on the Chinese mainland. Many members of the delegation were surprised to discover that their ancestors most likely came from the Chinese mainland. Archaeologists from the International Research Center for Austronesian Archaeology working at the Keqiutou site in Pingtan County, east China's Fujian Province, are focused on studying Austronesian prehistoric culture. In this episode of the "China Up Close” series, CGTN host Rachel Weiss visited the site to learn more about it. The site is dedicated to the study of prehistoric cultures along the southeastern coast of China. Research topics include the origin and diffusion of Austronesian languages as well as the prehistoric cultural relations between Fujian and Taiwan. There are many excavation sites in Pingtan where a plethora of cultural relics have been unearthed. The Austronesian peoples, sometimes referred to as Austronesian-speaking peoples, are a large group of peoples in China’s Taiwan region, Maritime Southeast Asia, parts of Mainland Southeast Asia, Micronesia, coastal New Guinea, Island Melanesia, Polynesia, and Madagascar that speak Austronesian languages. Tornado-spawning thunderstorms that swept the Southern Plains and the Ozark Mountains over the Memorial Day holiday weekend, killing at least 21 people across four U.S. states, are following a deadly pattern marking 2024 as one of the worst years for severe weather in more than a decade. William Bunting, deputy director of the National Weather Service's Storm Prediction Center, said the "astonishing" tally of more than 1,000 tornadoes so far this year can be traced in part to particularly warm water in the Gulf of Mexico, which has set the stage for massive, tornadic storms in the nation's midsection. The death toll over the three-day weekend included at least eight fatalities in Arkansas, seven in Texas, four in Kentucky and two in Oklahoma, according to tallies by state emergency authorities. The latest extreme weather came just days after a powerful tornado ripped through an Iowa town, killing four people, and more twisters touched down in Texas last week. Bunting stopped short of blaming this year's severe weather on climate change. "The bottom line, I think, is that it's unclear the extent to which climate change might be playing a role in overall severe weather occurrence." But he said more powerful analytical tools and more data could make the influence of climate change clearer in the future. The weather service warned that additional storms would move through the Ohio and Tennessee valleys, bringing damaging winds, large hail and more tornadoes, as well as heavy downpours capable of triggering flash floods.
