Mannheim, Germany — A major police operation is underway in Mannheim’s city center after a vehicle reportedly drove into a crowd in the Planken area, resulting in multiple casualties. 

Eyewitnesses reported that a black SUV accelerated from Paradeplatz towards Wasserturm, colliding with pedestrians along the busy shopping street. Debris is scattered across the scene, and at least one person was seen covered by a sheet, though their condition remains unconfirmed. 

Emergency services, including approximately 20 police vehicles and 15 ambulances, responded promptly to the incident. Helicopters are also in operation, and bridges connecting Mannheim to Ludwigshafen have been closed as a precautionary measure. 

Authorities have apprehended a suspect believed to be the driver of the vehicle. The motive behind the incident is currently under investigation.

Residents and visitors are advised to avoid the city center, particularly the areas around Wasserturm and Planken, due to ongoing emergency operations and potential traffic disruptions.
