Andrew Moore, regional director for the Halo Trust, told Al Jazeera that two years of Israeli bombardment have left over 78% of Gaza’s buildings destroyed, creating 61 million tonnes of debris and burying 7,500 tonnes of unexploded bombs. He said Gaza’s reconstruction could take at least 14 years due to the scale of contamination. The Halo Trust, known for mine clearance since Princess Diana’s Angola campaign, plans to deploy 100 bomb disposal experts to Gaza. Moore warned it is unsafe for residents returning or digging through rubble, as unexploded ordnance remains widespread. The NGO has applied for access to Gaza and hopes to expand operations once funding and approval are secured. He estimated a five-year plan costing around £60m annually to make reconstruction and aid delivery safe. Moore stressed that the goal is to facilitate humanitarian work and rebuilding without further casualties.
