Video: Trump backs Hegseth’s call for tougher US military standards

US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth has pledged to overhaul the Pentagon's approach to military preparedness, criticising what he called the influence of political correctness on the armed forces. Addressing an unprecedented assembly of over 800 generals and admirals at a US Marine base in Quantico, Virginia, Hegseth outlined plans to restore "old school" military standards, including stricter grooming policies, rigorous fitness requirements, and the revival of practices like hazing. The event, also attended by President Donald Trump, drew criticism for its cost, logistical challenges, and potential security risks. President Trump has expanded the military's role in domestic operations, deploying National Guard troops to address crime in major cities and proposing their use in Portland, Oregon. Critics fear the increased militarisation of domestic security could set a controversial precedent. The gathering highlighted broader debates about the balance between discipline and modernisation within the US armed forces. Al Jazeera’s John Hendren reports from Washington, DC. Video: Rohingya ask UN ‘where is the justice’ amid Myanmar violence, aid cuts

A high-level United Nations conference aimed at addressing the plight of Rohingya refugees has called for renewed global commitment to their cause. UN officials, including Volker Turk and Filippo Grande, emphasised the urgent need for action and additional funding, noting that the Rohingya humanitarian response plan is only 37 percent funded. The UN refugee agency warned that without further resources, life-saving assistance could face severe cuts, with children already dying from malnutrition and refugees risking their lives on perilous journeys at sea. The UK pledged an additional $36 million to support Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh, but criticisms emerged over the exclusion of Rohingya voices from the conference. Civil society representatives said the discussions fell short of delivering concrete solutions, with analysts describing the event as a repetition of past rhetoric. While new financial contributions met some objectives, the absence of a clear action plan leaves the Rohingya crisis unresolved. Al Jazeera’s Gabriel Elizondo reports from the UN in New York.
