At the London premiere of Netflix’s Office Romance, Jennifer Lopez made a direct statement about representation. “Usually I play in my romantic comedies the working girl,” she said. “But this time I got to play the CEO. A Latina CEO on the big screen is a big deal.”
Brett Goldstein, who co-wrote the film with Ted Lasso creator Joe Kelly, revealed the script was built around Lopez specifically. “We wanted to make an old-school rom-com, and we were like, who’s the best rom-com person? Obviously Jennifer Lopez,” Goldstein said. “We wrote it so specifically for her that we sent it to her and we said: the list has one name on it. If you don’t do it, we won’t make this film.”
The film marks a tonal shift for Lopez as well. When asked about the creative direction, she hinted at departing from her typical rom-com style. “The jokes are a little harder. Adult, let’s say. And so that made it a lot more fun,” Lopez said, without revealing specifics. “I’m super anxious for everybody to just see the movie and not talk about it.”
Directed by Ol Parker (Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again), Office Romance releases on Netflix June 5, 2026. The R-rated romantic comedy also stars Betty Gilpin, Amy Sedaris, Tony Hale, Bradley Whitford, and Edward James Olmos.
